Annual Theory Meeting

The Annual Theory Meetings ("Christmas Meetings") started in 1961 and have been held every year since (with the possible exception of two years), previously at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and more recently at Durham. Gordon Moorhouse and David Morgan have written a brief history of the early meetings.

General Information

Bed and breakfast accommodation will be in one of Collingwood College, St Mary's College or Grey College for the duration of your stay in Durham. You will be told which College you will be staying in before you come.

Irrespective of which College you will be staying in, lunch and dinner will be taken in the Dining Room in Grey College. Please inform us of any special dietary requirements.

It is important that you advise us as soon as possible if you wish to arrive earlier or stay later than the days of the meeting or if you need to make any other arrangements.

The meeting commences with a lunch between 12:30 and 13.15 p.m. on Monday 18th December in Grey College. You will be able to check-in at the College you are staying in from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. and then from 6:15 p.m. onwards. Rooms are to be vacated after breakfast on Wednesday 20th December and luggage can be left with reception.

The talks will be held in the Appleby Lecture Theatre in the Geography Department building on the University's Science Site, close to the Physics Department and a three minute walk from Grey College, five minutes from Collinwood and St. Mary's. The location of Grey College (marked 8), Collingwood College (marked 6), St. Mary's College (marked 10) the Geography and Physics buildings (marked 12) and the railway station are shown on the University map.

Durham is easily reached by train from all parts of the country. Should you wish to travel by car and require parking, please advise us as soon as possible as this has to be arranged in advance with the college. Please travel as cheaply as possible, as we will normally refund travel up to a Saver railfare only.
